WHAT A SATURDAY!!
Well, Maria S. took herself out of the US Open wearing a white (surrender?) version of her red cocktail dress, by comitting so many unforced errors and double faults, that her father hanged himself in the stands from a hot dog cart... Oh, well.
Michigan really came a cropper by being the first top 25 team ever to be defeated by a division 1AA team, losing to App State by 2--where will they end up in the polls? I say they drop 12 positions at least. AND Notre Dame didn't score a TD saturday. At least Zook lost, but to his credit? not by much. But we know he's good at that.
We watched the Gators on ESPN and then the USF Bulls
Gators and Tebow proved themselves ready for the SEC with their 49-3 victory over the Hilltoppers. Game was mercifully called with 8 minutes left because of lightening. Defense did better than I expected, but they've got a long way to go in two weeks to get ready for conference play. Bulls were lackluster and boring in their 28-13 victory over Elon--are they over rated?
During comercial breaks and time outs got to see some of the other SEC teams in action. First, Kentucky looked really talented in their crushing of Eastern Kentucky 50-10. This will not be an easy victory for the Gators. Georgia beat OK State, but didn't look all that tough to us. South Carolina only beat the Ragin Cajins by two touchdowns but they looked really good doing it.
The team that impressed us the most was Alabama, baating W. Carolina 52-6. Sabin has this team ready to be a force in the SEC West. They looked very competent to us.
Auburn didn't look that crisp to us. Maybe we have a chance against them...course all this is just opening game stuff, usually against weak opponents, so it doesn't mean a whole Lot.
So we are 22-2 in our predictions, but really, it was a no-brainer this week.
We didn't see any of the Arkansas-Troy came but the score was 46-26, so Troy can score against SEC defenses, which the Gators don't quite have, so the Offense will have to bury them next Week.
Saw the last quarter of the Cal-Tennesee game. Vols are such a HUGE dissapointment. But they looked good in the loss.
So bottom line is Tebow and Harvin and company did GREAT!
(Bye, Bye Craig!!)
Gators Throttle Hilltoppers, 49-3, In Season Opener
Before a crowd of 90,086 at The Swamp on Saturday, the sixth-ranked
The game was terminated with 8:23 left in the fourth quarter after a one hour and two minute delay due to lightning in the area.
After stopping WKU on 4th down and 1 inside of their own 10, the Gators marched 90 yards in six plays to seize a 7-0 lead. Tebow reeled off an 18-yard run on second down and then connected with senior Andre Caldwell (
Harvin hauled in a 19-yard reception from Tebow just 1:24 into the second quarter for a 21-0 margin for the Gators. All three plays on the 40-yard drive came from the speedy wideout, who previously had a 13-yard rush and 8-yard reception.
After forcing WKU three and out, Tebow moved the Gator offense 62 yards in nine plays in 3:13 for a 28-0 advantage with 8:11 remaining until the half. Tebow had a 13-yard rush to the Hilltoppers’ 43 yard-line and a 15-yard personal foul tacked on to the end of the run brought the ball to the 28. Junior Kestahn Moore (
A 26-yard field goal with no time remaining by senior Chris James brought the Hilltoppers into the locker room down by a 28-3 count. In the first half, Tebow was 9-for-11 with 192 yards and spread the ball to four different receivers.
Tebow threw a 43-yard pass to Caldwell and a 42-yard touchdown pass to Cooper back-to-back with 4:08 remaining in the third quarter to bring the score to 35-3. After forcing the Hilltoppers to a negative-rushing yard series, the Gators answered quickly with Moore rushing for 28 yards in the series, capping with a 1-yard touchdown to give the Gators a 42-3 lead.
Freshman quarterback Cameron Newton (College Park, Ga.) took the helm for the Gators in the fourth quarter leading the team to a 1:29, 4 play scoring drive. Newton capped off the drive with a 4-yard run for his first career touchdown as a Gator.
The Gator defense was equally as impressive as the offense with defensive end Derrick Harvey (Greenbelt, Md.) leading the team with two sacks. Linebacker Brandon Spikes (Shelby, N.C.) was explosive tallying 11 tackles, including seven solos.
The Gators return to action next Saturday when defending Sun Belt Conference champion Troy visits The Swamp for the first-ever meeting between the schools. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m.

Your observations of the Tide leave me heartened a bit but only one game means anything to the boosters and that is Auburn.
The Tide will beat the War EAgles this year, you have my word on it! (Saaben promised me)
