GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES?
Wouldn't it be a hoot if the Gators could win a championship in Basketball, Football and Ballroom Dancing all in the same year? #1 Gators--2006 NCAA Basket Ball Champions #4 Gators--2006 SEC East Football Champions #2 Emmitt Smith Finalist in ABC's Dancing with the Stars Well its just two days until Steve Spurrier returns to Florida Field (which he named the "Swamp") as an enemy combatant. A sad day for the Gator Nation. He returned several weeks ago as an honored guest and Hero. He returns Saturday in shame, and it will be a travesty if he is triumphant. Sadly, he is a turncoat to the Gator Nation. But....We forgive him, for we know him, and he is what he is. We think we know how he fell into this sad state of affairs: 1. His enormous world class ego was bruised when Florida didn't annoint him their new coach, because of pressure to hire a black coach, and asked him to go thru a formal search process. 2. He sorely wanted suscess after his ego-shattering failure in the NFL, and anything less than his steller 11 years performance at Florida would be deemed failure by the Gator nation--and he knew that. His was an impossible act to follow, by anyone, even himself. 3. At South Carolina, he had nowhere to go but UP, so sucess was assured--plus he would show himself to be a better coach than the legendary Lou Holtz... What an opportunity! His problem was, that he chose the SEC, thus turning himself into a traitor to the Gators. His must be a tortured soul. He could have written his ticket anywhere. Why didn't he choose the Big Ten? or the ACC? Students, fans, alumni--I exhort you: Don't boo the 'ol ball coach Saturday, Please. Let's maintain our class--remember he brought us our ONLY SEC championships and ONLY National Championship. Let's take the moral high ground. Saturday's game has lost significance. The gamecocks can't spoil our SEC Championship hopes. TheY CAN end our National Championship hopes, but those are a long shot anyway, and depend on other folks, too, not just the Gators winning out--like Rutgers beating Louisville tonite and OSU beating Michigan, among other things. Earlier in the year I said that beating Spurrier in the Swamp was our number one priority this year--things have changed--now it's the SEC Championship game in September. Spurrier and the gamecocks can't ruin our day!!
