WOW
Well the Heisman Curse is alive and well, so....Oh, well.
At least that moron Zook got his head handed to him on a platter by the Trojans. "We didn't play up to our potential"... What a tool!
Sean sent us this write-up about the WhiteHouse in Logansport in the Hungry Hoosier :
Lunch at the Whitehouse
My wife and I had the great fortune to visit Scotland a few years ago. One of our stops was in Dumfries where we spent a wonderful evening with Dumfries locals at the Hole i' the Wa Inn, one of the oldest continuously operating pubs in all of the UK. Open since 1620, this pub was one of Scottish poet Robert Burn's favorite watering holes. Local legend has it that he wrote many of his poems while on the pub's premises. What makes this place great is the history and the colorful group of locals who frequent the place.
Here in the U.S. we obviously don't have as much history and our food and drink establishments are beating the odds if they are stay in business for more than a couple of years. One place that has managed to survive is the Whitehouse in Logansport, Indiana. Proprietor Lester Hettinger opened this place in 1941 and has been slinging hash and flipping burgers ever since. A sixty-plus year history in the U.S. seems as ancient as a 400-year history in the U.K. and even though mugs get tipped rather than pint glasses, the Whitehouse has the same sort of local charm as the Hole i' the Wa
I visited this Logansport landmark a couple of weeks ago and was amazed to watch Mr. Hettinger work his kitchen like a someone a third of his age. The Whitehouse is set up like a diner with a few booths and ringside seats at the counter that overlooks the grill. The place was filled with locals ranging from small children to a few men who looked to be Lester's contemporaries.
Along the back wall hangs pegged coffee mugs with all sorts of logos and imprints. I soon learned that these are mugs brought in by regular customers to use on their visits. One by one people would come in and the waitress would retrieve their mug to fill it with coffee. Amazing. I'm thinking about sending them a Hungry Hoosier mug for me to use when I pass through. I would be honored to have my mug hang in a place like this.
The menu is what you might expect - breakfast, burgers and other sandwiches for lunch. I was passing through sometime between breakfast and lunch so just had a burger ($ .90) and a soft drink. The burger was tasty but it is the entire Whitehouse experience that will keep me coming back.
The Whitehouse is located at 87 South 6th Street in Logansport. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays and open 4 am - 1 pm Wednesday - Saturday and 4 am - 11 am on Sundays. Pay them a visit.
GO GATORS--WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR!
