THE BURDEN
"The White man took the savage beasts out of the jungle into the light of civilization and made them beasts of burden and took care of them. Then they exposed them to culture, art, science, industry and humanity, and education. They released them into the world, but they languished and did not flourish and so they still had to take care of them. Then they gave them an exalted position and special privilege and still took care of them. They gave them power and as soon as they secured it, they promptly and ferociously destroyed the culture, art, science, industry and education of the White Man. And the Light of civilization dimmed, and the jungle crept back and it was dark once again. And the savage beasts were sated." --John R. Burroughs, London, 1878
