UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT
It is 7:03 a.m. and 44.8 degrees. Patrick got up and is now downstairs sleeping with Junior.
Junior and I, as you may know, traveled down to Lexington to watch the Gators beat the 7th ranked Wildcats for the 21st time in a row.
We attended ESPN's College Game Day featuring Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso. When we arrived, with our five-foot plush Gator in tow, we were greeted by a chorus of Boos. No problem, quite Normal. But then, when we approached the line for the pit, we were pelted by full bottles of water. A guy rushed up and grabbed the Gator, and Junior was plunged into a tug of war. I grabbed the guys forearms and told him "You really don't want to do this." I must have convinced him, because he retreated. I have no doubt that if he had been successful, the toy would have been torn apart by the angry crowd. At no time, as far as I could discern, did any Kentucky fans attempt to discourage these hostile acts. As we left, I was hit in the leg with a crunched up beer can.
These were isolated incidents, but there were others, as well. One drunken student blocked my path, with lude gestures and words, but I just walked around him
Someone dropped a bottle from the top of the parking garage on us.
In no instances did we do anything by way of words or actions to provoke anybody(we're not that stupid).
At one point, three campus cops arrived on their bicycles, but stayed less than five minutes.
We did see one shirtless Kentucky fan hauled away in handcuffs. Probably one of the guys who were throwing bottles into the middle of the crowd at Gator fans, with no regard to who they hit. Or maybe he was one of the Kentucky fans ripping up Gator signs...
Just a few bad apples in the barrel, I suppose. Everybody else was generally good natured, and when we got inside Commonwealth, decorum and civility reigned.
At the GameDay post game show later in the evening, the County Cops told one Kentucky fan, "You've got thirty seconds to leave or you'll be arrested!" He left. He was heckling Lee Corso, and used some innappropriate language.
So it goes.
